Send Later Extension Updated

Whoa! That was quick.

There were a couple of minor issues with the Send Later extension which was brought to my attention. These items are now fixed:

Send Later Icon Send Later version 1.0.2
Fixed - Mac OSX dialog was too cramped.
Fixed - Other messages in Draft cause the extension to crash. [Background polling].
Fixed - Temporary files are now deleted after sending email

This extension is now in the Mozilla Add-Ons sandbox, and once someone reviews it, I can nominate it, then once someone approves it, it will be available from Mozilla addons public page…

Till then download/update away.

Update: I just updated the page to include a screenshot preview

This is a very necessary extension for me, especially now that SendTools is fading away. Thanks!

Glad to hear it has helped. I will do my utmost to keep it updated.

Tried our neat little extension yesterday in TB 1.5.10 and it didn’t work — several test msgs didn’t go out. Attempted to send a comment here, but that didn’t work either — so replied in the TB thread where you talked about your new design.

Now did the same today in TB 2.0.0 with same result. One msg didn’t go.

These were set to go out anywhere from 2 to 4 minutes later. Is that perhaps too short of a time interval? Now have one more sitting in the drafts folder scheduled to go out in 5 minutes which is 2 minutes away. It’s now 10 minutes later and both are still in the drafts folder.

What’s up?

Thanks for this great addon. Is it possible to include an icon for sending mails later? maybe an additional option for the pull- down menue of the “send”- button? That would be great.

Benjamin DApril 21st, 2007 at 02:29

Sorry. Forget about my request. I use MagicSLR and just added the “Send later”- button.

As you are clearly good at this sort of thing, will you not please also write an extension to implement filtering on outgoing mail? Please??

Thank you!

Karthik SApril 21st, 2007 at 14:55

James,

What does that exactly entail, I would glad to give it a try if you can describe what it is supposed to do.

Seem to be so great extension.

Unfortunately I’ve got the same problem on Thunderbird 2.0.0.0.

When I write a msg and try to send it later I’ve got the animation -##-##–> on the task bar. On the defined time nothing append. When I restart Thunderbird I’ve got Send Later 1.02 on the TB. Then it send the all unsended msg and print on the TB -#-##–>.

Great extension. However, I had to recently disable it since the extension was causing a noticeable pause in Thunderbirds editor. I determined that the pause was occurring at the same interval as defined by the extensions option.

As I was composing an e-mail, the editor display would stop echoing my text for a second or too. This obviously can disturb ones ‘flow’. Once I disabled your extension, the pauses stopped.

Otherwise, it’s a great idea.

Marty

p.s. I was running the extension (version 1.0.2) with Thunderbird 2.0.0.0

Good morning Karthik,

I’m a user of Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5.0.10. I’ve 4 mail accounts – 1 Yahoo and 3 Gmail. I also have quite a few RSS feeds in Thunderbird. Send Later 1.0.2 isn’t working for me as expected. When I open Thunderbird, the status window shows “Send Later 1.0.2”. But after sometime it reads “–#—->”. A mail scheduled for departure doesn’t get out of the drafts. I tried the extension with mails being saved in local draft folders for the respective accounts as well as the common drafts folder. Neither of the methods works. I tried whatever I could, but nothing seems to solve the problem. I’d like to tell you that my polling interval is 1000 ms. Could you please help me? I love the concept of Send Later and I appreciate your effort towards the development of the extension. If you need any more information towards resolving my problem, such as OS or hardware related facts do ask me. Have a nice day.

Regards,

Pradeep

Marty,

I am aware of that particular problem (basically happens if you have a couple of emails in draft folder with attachments) This is a bug and has been fixed in the next release (hopefully tonight). Till then the only work around is to delete any unnecessary items from drafts.

Pradeep,

I am working through this issue with a couple of beta testers and hope to have it resolved soon. If you like to beta test too, please send me an email.

Pradeep,

Also 1000ms is probably a BIT TOO FAST (1000ms is 1 second), keep it around or above 30000ms (30 secs) so ideally you dont want to strain Thunderbird so much.

It sure would be nice to be able to just check a box and set the time on the actual composer window like I currently do with SendTools

Karthik SApril 23rd, 2007 at 22:09

TechFan

Personally the restrictions in size in the compose window/ further cluttering of the compose window is the reason I chose to implement it as a popup. Personally I feel that it is a bit more straight forward and more user friendly. Maybe not as power user as you prefer ? I am open to suggestions though, right now I dont feel the interface needs major changes.

Karthick,

The 1.1.5 solve my problem.

I don’t like that I have to make more choices after I send the message. That probably is why I like it much better in the compose window. With Send Tools it is a small box to the right of the way-longer-than-needed To: line, so it doesn’t add any clutter. By choosing before I send, it seems less likely I would forget to set the date after choosing send. . .obviously, this is just my preference. . .in my opinion, more popup prompts are clutter. . .

Thanks for listening.

TechFanApril 24th, 2007 at 17:55

One more quick observation. Send Tools (sorry, it is my reference to this concept) accomplishes everything from that dialog box in a very short bit of text. Now that I look at it in detail. . .I am amazed that it call got fit in that small space.

Karthik SApril 25th, 2007 at 01:15

TechFan,

As a compromise between uncluttered interface and the power user’s requirement I am working on making a toolbar available so you can customize how you want to use the extension. So just wait for the update to hit the tubes soon. :-)

Karthick,

The extensions looks very promising but I just can’t get it to work with thunderbird. Well, actually it’s IceDove 1.5.0.10 on Debian GNU/Linux 4.0. I’ve emptied the drafts folder, and I notice that once the time arrives [--->--->] appears.

I’ve got only imap accounts, but several smtp-servers. One of them requires authentication, but I just saved the password for it and it still didn’t work. Then I changed the default smpt-server to one that doesn’t require authentication. Still no go…

Karthik SMay 3rd, 2007 at 13:15

Hi Martin,

Looks like you are using an older version of the extension, the latest release version is 1.1.5 which solves a lot of problems with imap folders etc. The latest beta version is 1.1.7 which adds the toolbar mode and others [This will become release 1.2.0 sometime this week]

If you are still having problems, let me know and we can try to solve it.

Regards
Karthik

MartinMay 3rd, 2007 at 23:15

Hello Karthik,

Sorry, I posted the comment on the wrong page, Yes, I tried the 1.1.5 release first, but thought that maybe an older release would solve my problems. It didn’t help :( As stated earlier I use imap. The drafts folder is stored remotely on all accounts. I’m willing to betatest this on Debian if you want me to.

Hi Martin,

I was wondering if you recvd my email regarding debugging your problem. Please let me know how you go ?

Cheers
